Moving up 1 step from Anahata chakra..

Vishudda is translated to, pure or purification; it is the name for the throat chakra and it’s associated colour is blue. ย It’s element is Ether or sound and the main aspect or purpose of Vishudda chakra is communication and creativity, it’s located at the throat area; it’s related organs are the vocal chords, mouth, throat, ears (very essential in some communications) and the thyroid/parathyroid glands.

The basic right developed with Vishudda chakra is the right to speak or be heard; I feel we’re undergoing massive transition in this with our current changing times – this and our abilities to express our creativity. ย Expression requires freedom of speech and self in space and time; thus working with this chakra can be massively liberating.

Characteristics displayed in Vishudda chakra when it is balanced are:

  • Clear communication
  • Good listening and receiving skills
  • Freely creative and expressive
  • Sense of timing and rhythm

ย Excess in Vishudda chakraย can manifest in signs relating to the following:

  • Poor auditory comprehension, or simply an inability to listen
  • Gossiping or too much talking (talking as a defense)
  • Often interrupting, a dominating voice

Insufficiency in Vishudda chakraย sometimes manifests as:

  • Introversion or shyness, a fear of speaking, often a weak voice
  • Difficulty expressing ones feelings
  • Poor rhythm, or tone deaf

If one is interested in healing at this chakra then practices which help to support the balanced characteristics all help, these could be things such as singing, chanting, story telling (if deficient), free and open-ended creativity, releasing shoulder tension, writing a journal or if in excess then practicing silence..

Moving up from Manipura Chakra..

Anahata chakra, also known as the heart chakra; is located just below the sternum/breast bone. ย The heart is considered to be at the centre of the body and puts out thousands of times more electromagnetic activity than the brain; you really have got to live in a cave these days to not have awareness of the heart’s connection to love and relationships (both with ourselves and others). ย Anahata is associated to the element of air and thus also is related to the respiratory as well as the cardiac system; it’s representative colour is green.

The basic right of this chakra is to love and to be loved.

Some of the characteristics displayedย if one is balanced in this chakraย are:

  • To be loving and compassionate (to self and others)
  • Have a good immune system
  • Being peaceful and balanced
  • Empathic and altruistic

If one is working with issues in this chakra they may either have excessive of deficient energy, or both, and thus will potentially display:

Excessive energy

  • Demanding and clingy
  • Codependent and poor boundaries
  • Jealous
  • Unduly sacrificing

Deficient energy

  • Lacking empathy or excessively self-interested
  • Self-isolation, loneliness or depression
  • Withdrawn and fearing relationships
  • Judgmental, critical and/or intolerant

Due to it’s association with air and physical location in the body, good balancing activities for anahata chakra are breathing exercises or pranayama, journaling and potentially work on self-acceptance, emotional release and relationships. ย Helping us to comprehend and thus open our hearts from a place which feels right, rather than feeling we “should” or “shouldn’t” love; loving where we feel works best for our journey and those we influence/are influenced by.

Spring has it’s way of getting things to freshen up, move along and get the party starting..

With the New Moon in Aries today, Mothers day in the UK, rounding up to my last week of full-time ‘in the system’ working, expanding my family (a brother rather than a baby, not quite ready for motherhood yet!), meeting some fabulous, intelligent and spiritual lovers, and feeling all star-struck by being in the same space as the beautiful Johnny Depp; it really is time to lay down those intentions for the next month..

What do I want to create from here?.

How can I best fulfill my life for the good and love of our universal, global consciousness?

 

Time to meditate as there’s no time to hesitate.. ย How best to let go, remembering you just gotta go with the flow..

What is Kefir and How does it work??

Kefir comes in 2 forms, milk or water kefir. ย I personallyย loveย the thick, and creamy milk Kefir; a super probiotic, tangy, thick and creamy yoghurt/drink, but on a more recent drive to lessen or stop (I’m going to listen to my body here and go with its flow) animal products consumption I’ve moved onto water kefir.

Hence, here I’ll share about both with you depending on your taste..

Eating Kefir can be of benefit to your body in many ways:

  • Helps to optimise good digestion
  • Regulate bowel movements
  • Heighten immunity
  • Help balance the guts in dysbiosis (imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in the gut)

I personally have found drinking it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is the best, especially if your newer to super pro-biotic drinks, as depending on your internal bacteria and composition, it can have an adverse effect in needing the bathroom or feeling bloated. It’s probably important to add that not one glove fits all with foods and drinks, I love this stuff, it’s really been a help to me, I can drink it any time of the day without unwanted repurcusions but then I’ve been working with probiotics for about the last decade, when I learnt that they might be the key to helping me with my digestion and multitude of disorders which can come when the body is struggling to process foods. It took me a couple of years to work out my rhythm and what works best for my body. I see this as a bit of a medicine, in that not everyone needs it. As a child I suffered from a lot of ear aches and so had a lot of anti-biotics, as well as always having a fussy tummy (not being breastfed is one thing I’m curious if lead into this but can’t be sure) but having a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease in my 20s was a sure sign that my processing internally needed some additional support. This may resonate with you, it may not, if you feel the impulse to try, then try! There’s no harm in it, so long as if it doesn’t feel right that you discontinue trying ๐Ÿ™‚

Manipura Chakra

Moving up from Swadisthana Chakra to..

Manipura (mani = jewel, pura = dwelling place), also known as the solar plexus chakra. ย It is depicted by the colour yellow and associated to the fire element; it’s located just above the belly button where it has it works with the digestive system. ย Manipura is also thought to have governance over our muscles too, thus potentially a link to why it has a relation to power.

In terms of developmental work, manipura is associated with ourย power and transformation; power funnily enough coming back to the ‘power house’ of the core-muscles and the digestive fire, hence it is also stimulated when we use uddiyana bhanda (core lock) during our physical yoga practice.

Balanced characteristics of this chakra exhibit in a person as:

  • Having good self-esteem and confidence, being balanced through the ego
  • Being responsible and reliable
  • Having a good yet warm sense of humor
  • Possessing good self-discipline

Or perhaps if you feeling the fire or power struggles in life one may be exhibit excess, deficiency, or both, in this chakra; manifesting in things such as..

Deficient characteristics:

  • Low-energy and self-esteem
  • Poor digestion
  • Passive and unreliable
  • Victim mentality

Excessive characteristics:

  • Hyperactive
  • Overly aggressive, manipulative and controlling
  • Stubborn and competitive
  • Need to be right and have the last word

Of course, like anything, if you feel you could do with some help with some points listed above, that’s the biggest step towards achieving your own balance in life. ย Yoga is simply one mechanism which can help you to get in tune with yourself and any issues you may be presenting; it’s about seeing the choice between being victim, perpetrator and empower-er of the life you love.

Building life a new

Change

Nutrition, movement, fitness and food have been fastidious points in my life since I can remember. ย How exciting it feels for me to be working with them in a more organised and structured manner! ย As well as having the potential to not only further optimise my own condition, but the general health of others too!

Swadhisthana Chakra

Stepping up from our roots at Mooladhara Chakra to..

Swadhisthana chakra is translated as the ‘self dwelling place’ chakra, it’s located between the naval and the genitals. ย It’s main aspect is sweetness, the sweetness of love and life, flowing with our emotions; thus is also has a connection to the water element. ย The parts of the body it ย associates with it are the genitals, womb, bladder, circulation, tears, and kidneys (i.e. the more wet, or watery parts of us).

The purpose of development at this chakra is to assist our letting go and flowing with the movement of life; accepting what it. ย Also, it is about our connection with ourselves and others, at times ‘reclaiming our right to feel'(1) our needs, desires, pleasure and emotions.

Some of the characteristics displayedย if one is balanced in this chakraย are:

  • Ability to change
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Has healthy boundaries
  • Graceful movement
  • Ability to experience pleasure

If one is working with issues in this chakra they may either have excessive of deficient energy, or both, and thus will potentially display:

Excessive energy

  • Sexual acting out or addiction and seductive manipulation
  • Ruled by their emotions (mood swings, drama queen, hysterical)
  • Poor boundaries, invade other’s boundaries
  • Oversensitive and/or emotional dependency

Deficient energy

  • Rigidity and frigidity in body and sex
  • Lack of desire, passion or excitement and denial of pleasures
  • Poor social skills
  • Excessive boundaries

Working with the swadhisthana ย chakra means we look at ways we can assist our flow and connection within our bodies, emotions and relationships. ย Helping to reclaim our right to feel, this chakra is first established between 6 months and 2 years of age.

Full Moon (this Sunday)

The full moon occurs when the moon is directly opposite the sun and thus when it’s interaction with the sun is at it’s strongest. ย It’s notorious with many that the irregularities which occur on a full moon are of significance; this super charge of energy however, can come out as insanity if not noticed and meditated upon accordingly.. ย Or, it could be seen as an opportunity to help the fruition of our goals which were set at the new moon, with this additional energy helping us to see and develop beyond any current obstacles.

Mooladhara Chakra

The Mooladhara chakra (it’s Sanskrit name), translated as ‘root’ chakra, is located at the base of the spine, close to the perineum.

The element of the root chakra is Earth and it is our energetic connection to the physical. ย The parts of the body associated with it are the legs and feet, large intestine and anus, or more solid body parts such as teeth and bones.

The basic right of this chakra is the right to be here in this physical realm and the right to have. ย Some of the characteristics displayed if one is balanced in this chakra are:

  • Good health
  • Well grounded
  • Feels safe and trusting in the world
  • Stable and prosperous
  • Ability to relax

If one is working with issues in this chakra they may either have excessive of deficient energy, or both, and thus will potentially display:

Excessive energy

  • Greed, hoarding material possessions
  • Lazy, tired and sluggish often
  • Obesity and overeating
  • Fear of change and rigid boundaries

Deficient energy

  • Restless, anxious and often fearful
  • Underweight and disconnected from their body
  • Poor ability to focus and exert discipline
  • Poor boundaries and financial difficulties

Working with the root chakra means we look at ways we can assist grounding and connecting with the physical body. ย Helping to reclaim our right to be on this Earth, this chakra is established (during the womb and the first 6 months post being born).

Turmeric, the wonder spice

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been renowned for it’s anti-inflammatory and healing properties for thousands of years. ย It’s a relative of ginger and can come in its fresh root form or more commonly as a dried powder. ย Both the oil and the yellow-orange pigment (curcumin) parts of tumeric have been much researched and have been found to have significant anti-inflammatory effects, as well as anti-oxidative, antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungalย effects; especially the curcumin.

Additionally, turmeric contains essential mineralsย Manganese, Iron , Copper and Potassium, as well as Vitamin B6.

Anti-inflammatory medicines (herbal and pharmaceutical) workย by helping to decrease swelling. ย Swelling is the bodies reaction to tissue damage, this swelling reaction causes increased electrical activity to occur at your nerve endings and thus can increase pain felt. ย Research has shown turmeric can be effective to help manage:

  • Osteoarthritis (possibly rheumatoid also but less research on this)
  • IBD: intestinal bowel disease (Crohns and colitis)
  • Depression
  • Gloated/gassy/painful stomach or intestines
  • Headaches

How to use it –ย Quantity (I never measure but appreciate some do):

  • Fresh root: 1.5 – 3 g per day
  • Dried root powder: ย 1/2 to 1 tsp per day for general health, I’ve been using a lot more when having active Crohns; but like everything – start modest and check with your doctor if you suspect any untoward reactions are occurring.

You can also buy it as it’s separate oil and curacumin counterparts, if so then reduce the amount slightly as it will potentially be more concentrated.

Methodology:

  • Make a paste* to use as desired
  • Put 1/2 tsp per person into meals when cooking

Studies have shown that turmeric raw and on it’s own not only tastes gak but, its potency is pretty meagre.ย  I’ve had friends just dumping a teaspoon in tea or milk, trust me,ย read on and you can make a tasty andย much more effective drink or snack with ease.

Theย turmeric needs to beย combined with black pepper, lemon juice, and/or a fat to increase it’s bioavailability and potencyย hence, making a paste is a super easy way to have a ready supply of turmeric available with maximumย efficacy in reaching andย helpingย your blood, digestionย and any stressed out body parts in need.

Tumeric Paste Recipe:

Again, I find rough approximations work fine, if you’re making this chances are you’ve been stressing enough already!ย  Tip, it can be a bit messy, wear an apron ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • 1 Part Tumeric Powder
  • 4 Parts Water
  • Good dose of black pepper ground in
  • Optional coconut oil can be added whilst cooking or after cooking add coconut, olive, flax or hemp oil to your preference
  • Other spices you’re working with, ginger can be good for digestive issues (for some), cardamoms, coriander seed, cumin (I’m not a fan of cumin but some find this works out well), garlic.
    • All of the above suggestions can be added during the cooking process, garlic sometimes is better raw, go with your guts

Put water, turmeric, black pepper and other optional extras in a pan, cook/simmer it for a minimum of 10 minutes.ย  It’ll make a paste and thicken.ย  Use immediately or leave to cool in some clean jars and store in the fridge for up to a few weeks (unless of course it seems to go manky before).

Recipes!

Tumeric Latte (great for winter!)

  • 1 – 4 tsps. turmeric paste
  • Cup of milk (your choice of milk, whatever makes you happy and feel good, stress free ๐Ÿ˜‰ )
  • Honey to tasteย (raw of course is best if possible)
  • Optional coconut oil (find it’s the most complimenting out of potential oils)
  • Little more black pepper, depending on how much was added at time of making the paste, I like it spicy

Heat paste, few grinds of black pepper,ย and milk in a pan (not microwave, obvious reasons),ย  add the oil andย honey once in the mug.ย  Stir it, taste it, add more honey maybe! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Turmeric Tea (lighter version, summer vibes)

  • 1 – 4 tsps. turmeric paste
  • boiled water
  • Juice of 1/4 or 1/2 lemon, try it
  • Optional coconut oil (find it’s the most complimenting out of potential oils)
  • Bruised fresh ginger
  • Little more black pepper, depending on how much was added at time of making the paste, I like it spicy

 

The quick and easy method I like for this is to peel and bash a smallish finger of ginger, put it into a mug; addย freshly boiled water,ย stir inย some paste and squeeze in half a lemon.ย  Done.

I have friends who taught me about this who leave out the paste part and put it all in a pan and cook it up as and when.ย  Something like:

Add turmeric (one way to work with fresh turmeric and to not bother needing to grate it and stain your hands yellow for a week!), cumin, coriander seed, (or not, however you like it), fresh garlic and ginger, and ground black pepper into a pan.ย  Heat it all up for a minimum of 10 minutes.ย  Add the watery part to your mug and squeeze in some lemon juice, add some coconut oil here too if that’s your bag.

Simple!

I share this not as a fad but because I know this works!ย  Since my gastroenterologist suggestedย turmeric to me about 7 years ago I’ve made a point of using and investigating it’s benefits when I’ve had flare ups of the Crohns.ย  This has been an un-crippling pain reliever to say the least.ย  Hope it helps ๐Ÿ˜‰
