When to go to yoga Vs. When not to go to yoga

whentogo

It comes up relatively frequently for me, as a hunch, intuition or sometimes a humanistic rash judgement, without knowing someone’s full situation first (one reasonย I wanted to write this, to encourage people to open aย dialog moreย before session starts); thinking someone might had beenย better off to stay at home. ย Or, upon hearing the reason for someone’s absence, feeling maybe it could have helped if they had joined in. ย I had a friend/student call me last night with regards to if they ought to join the class or not; they had been sick in bed all day, felt pretty rubbish but were very excited to come to practice; my answer was to stay in bed.. ย Generally I won’t turn some one away, and intend to not interrupt their process as you never know the kind of day or week that has been had. ย Unless it’s a medical condition or, compromising their health or recovery, everyone is welcome; discernment taken by each individual about their own abilities, in each moment with conscious and with clear intentions, not just when a part of the self has become compromised.

Classes tend to be a mixed bag of bodies and souls, bringing your body to class with all it’s nuances is anticipated; but if the nuance/sickness/pregnancy is new and you don’t know how to handle it, then ask your regular teacher and if they can support you in your regular class. ย Communicate what you need, then if they aren’t confident to have your best interests at heart, it’s a really good idea to get some help in an/some individual sessions or specialist classes so you are more empowered in your practice.

When it’s a good idea to go to class (even if sometimes you feel a bit lazy, or cold or simply not sure):

  • Exactly that – if it’s cold outside, you’ve got too much on your mind, or if you’re in two minds about going to class, simply move your ass and go! ย However, ย if it’s your intuition saying no, a firm, deep no, then this is different, and needs to be listened to and respected. ย If it’s because you have too much on your mind or feel too ‘busy’ then go, particularly going to yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi or other similar discipline can help your busy mind to function better. ย In these modalities of movement where you to meditate on the moment, you allow your subconscious mind to work out all of those things which are bugging your brain. ย The more you try to solve a problem which alludes you, the further the answer will be.
  • If you’ve been ill but you’re getting over it. ย Clearly, if you’re still bed bound, don’t go and read below. ย When you’re mainly healed, it’s important you move your body, and get the lymphatic system flowing and draining properly, moving your muscles allows this to happen much more ย effectively. ย Laying still will not help you to rid yourself of toxins, and to feel fresher the next day; however if it’s a major illness you’re recovering from take it slowly; if you’ve been out of it for more than a few days, start really easy and make sure your doctor is happy with you rejoining class. ย Incorporate plenty of rest, nourishment and water or herbal teas afterย class, more than likely you’ll feel much better the next day.
  • If you don’t get out much, or trying to manage a condition which perhaps has special needs. ย Locate someone who feels good for you, even if you can only gauge it from a trusted friends recommendation, a picture, or a phone call. ย If you have issues which mean you might need help or have special needs during a class, talk to the teacher and see if they can facilitate for this and to enable you to make yourself comfortable. ย Being a part of a small group of people, in a mindful space, is a really good for body and soul. ย If a small group feels too much, book a 1:1 (sometimes can be at your home even), ensure you get a feeling for your guide/teacher first.
  • If your muscles are tight from stress, too much cardio or high impact, mega DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) perhaps. ย Get stretching! ย Find yoga or Pilates to recentre and realign your body and mind, and help relieve muscle tightness and stiffness. ย Muscles need lengthening, not just strengthening, and any good yoga or Pilates class with help you to do both!

When not to go to class:

  • If you’re sick and in bed. ย If you’re that sick you need to stay in bed. ย If it’s a cold or flu then also consider your class mates and teacher not getting sick too from you (this goes for being in public spaces, in Japan, the sick people are the ones wearing the face masks, might try this one myself if need to be out when have flu!).
  • If you’re in your first trimester of pregnancy or think you might be pregnant, or if you’re undergoing IVF. ย At this time class (although other teacher’s opinions will differ), you’re very sensitive, it’s when your body needs all of it’s energy to make a new home for your new baby! ย If you are yearning to move, find someone who knows about these times of life and have a 1:1, or if they run classes ask them if you can join. ย If you are advanced and consistent with your practice before your pregnancy, then this might then be different for you. ย But when there’s another life at stake, I’d always say take the easier and safer option, for the first trimester at least. ย If you are advanced and can’t afford a 1:1 – perhaps gentle home practice is better than a vinyasa high energy class, maybe pregnancy classes or at least get some basic advice about how to adapt BEFORE you get into any postures or move.
  • If you’ve recently had surgery or are being looked after by a doctor (heart, bone, blood, nerve, brain, respiratory, hormonal, digestive lymphatic issues, everything!) and not been signed off yet. ย I’ve sadly turned people away from classes for this kind of thing, it feels rubbish to do.. ย Unless you’re signed off, then you’re still fragile and your body needs to be kept resting, if you must move about, ask your doctor what you can do now, and always, always tell your instructor or teacher about things when you return to class or sessions.
  • If your gut, heart or intuition simply tells you not to. ย Because you’re going out drinking, isn’t an excuse. ย But if you feel it deep to your core not to go, never override these instincts; it’s usually the first instinct which is best as it is unadulterated by the mind. ย We’ve been taught for too long to ignore these instincts, it’s important to allow this sense of self to blossom within, it can save much time, effort and pain if we can listen to ourselves better!

What I’ve learnt on a Plant Dieta

dieta

Before I embarked on this adventure to diet with a plant, i.e. the drinking of a medicine produced by boiling its bark (or other part of the plant/tree depending on the medicine prescribed for you); I had no idea what I was getting myself in for.

I knew there would be plant ceremonies with the native Ayahuasca on this 2 week retreat, and I knew maybe I’d be eating a clean diet for a while but, I had no idea what I would be getting as a part of the ‘plant-dieta’..

Why do a plant diet/dieta?

When you diet with a plant (also known as a master plant) you are taking on said master plant as a spirit ally, during the plant dieta/diet, you drink a certain amount of the medicine made from this plant (usually a brew from boiledย bark or roots, or sometimes it’s put into alcohol) for a set number of days that you have, or that your shaman deems appropriate for you. ย In this time, as the plant begins to grow, it also starts healingย you; don’t worry, it’s not like you’re going to be taken oven and have a tree growing out of your butt, but rather growing with you energetically and spiritually.

Each plant has different healing properties, they are prescribed based on where you are in life and perhaps what kind of healing you require. ย For me, I dieted with a grand tree from the Amazon called Chuchuwasha; I’ve read many different things on it since coming back to the UK but the best correlation I could get between the internet and the wonderful man who was making these medicines out in Peru was that it:

Improves energy (and yes it certainly has for me! ย I’ve not felt so good in at least 10 years!), helps decision making and finding ones centre. ย Heals scars, heals hernias, colds, burns and it’s usedย to heal arthritis or rheumatism too.

What does it entail?

As I mentioned before, you need to drink the medicine of this plant for an amount of time (I was in dieta for 12 days with it), at given amounts and times of the day. ย For me, this was 1/3 of a small glass 3 times a day, 30 minutes before each meal. ย I won’t lie, it tasted foul. ย It sometimes also had big gloopy bits, which I tried to drink, but one bit was bigger than my mouth so I had to use it as a medicine for the wildlife outside my tambo (traditional jungle sleeping hut). *gag* gracias medicina *gag*

chuchuDifferent shamans will have different regimes, ours was pretty strict, during dieta when drinking our master plants, we were only permitted to eat basic carbs like rice, quinoa, potatoes and oats, no salt, no sugar, no fruit, no dairy and no condiments or spices. ย Also allowed were vegetables, salad (but no onions, tomatoes or avocados) and the occasional small, bony river fish; but no oils, no nuts, no seeds, no meat and no legumes. ย This is so that the plant you’re cultivating to be your ally doesn’t get disturbed, so it has the best chance to grown within your energy and stay with you for life.

And seeing as spices are out, of course, no alcohol, no chemical products (not even to wash clothes unless it’s done for you – thank you to the beautiful women taking care of me at the centre), no perfumes, no toothpaste, no shampoo, the odd not too strong essential oil is ok, in moderation. ย Different master plants also have their different traits and attributes, some are strong and righteous and therefore require you to be very strict with your diet and post-diet; some are more jealous and may cause adverse effects if you wear the fragrance of other plants too much from soaps or other products. ย Also, no sex, no touching or hugging each other and no stimulation from playing music (unless with your own instrument), no TV, there was no wifi to offer temptation luckily, no reading unnecessary materials and to include plenty of meditation, writing and reflective time; but no masturbation either! ย If you smoke, you can buy pure tobacco in Peru, or mapachos, which are used in ceremony for protection and cleansing, but no normal tobacco or cigarettes, leave out the chemicals..

It’s important to adhere to how you’ve been advised as not only can it damage the diet and your bond with your plant but it can make you feel really unwell and some say can fire back at your shaman and make them unwell too. ย The no touching part and no TV etc is because during dieta you are extremely sensitive and open; you are open to take on the energy of others, which more than likely will not serve you; and of course, you may be dieting with a more jealous master plant! ย Nature is the best place to be. ย There was minimal electricity at the centre, onlyย a small amount of solar power which I occasionally used to charge my phone to know the time relative to when was dinner/medicine time or upon waking during the night to know how long it’d be until sunrise!

At this centre I also mentioned the work with ayahuasca, wow, this kind of work is never compulsory but I’ve found it deeply profound in helping me to realise or remember several things about who I really am, what I want out of life and even how I can go about changes in myself to align more with the greater good. ย The ceremonies are the part where you recieve a shed load of information, remove a few layers of dirt from your internal mirror and re-calibrate where you’re at in life, major reset and healing time.

Thankfully at the retreat centre, everything to do with food is done for you, the expert chefs/muma/sister feed you abundantly on the foods you can eat and ensure you don’t get confused with the food which may be being eaten by non-dieting people who visit the centre; I wish I had planned in to do my post-dieta there too.

What I’ve learnt on aย plant dieta?

What I’ve learnย on this plant dieta, combined with the interspersed ayahuasca ceremonies (not having them every day is perfect, they require a lot of energy and thus also some proper restoration time after), is about how I received so much energy, so much clarity, healing, and discernment. I had been working with low energy levels for going on 10 years now, major problems with my intestines and digestion and large amounts of anxiety; I feel the power and the spirit of this tree is now a part of me, I feel stronger and more able to take on the world again; even from the position of living in the opportunity mecca ofย London.

Not only that, but I also reconnected to myself and nature. ย The environmental settings are key. ย By the second day a big part of me wanted tobobbinsana leave, I was sh*t scared of the hairy caterpillar farm which was a part of my tambo, the spiders who showed up in my mosquito net and all the noises of things I’d never met before. ย Not knowing if I would get bitten by something dangerous or, end up with ants in my pants and more than just mosquito bites on my ass, arms and ankles.. ย Being reassured that there was nothing lethal around me I began to get used to the ants, I stopped trying to kill all the creepy crawlies and instead got to know them, saw them simply moving about their business and neither of us needing to hurt the other. ย This is a BIG and ongoing lesson for me..

Combined with the ayahuasca ceremonies I managed to shed a lot of accumulated energies which weren’t mine, and were just weighing me down. ย I can now see a lot bigger perspective and a lot more clearly about where I end and another begins, and where we are allย actuallyย inseparable.

What now?

So now, I am during my 3rd week post-dieta which means I still have another 10-20 days of restrictive diet to really allow chuchuwasha to settle in my system and also not to shock my system with too many strong foods or products. ย I’ve noticed if I do accidentally disturbย the diet (having cold water if you’d believe it) or am exposed to the London commute too intensely, that I really feel it. ย It’s difficult integrating into ‘normality’, but to be honest, I don’t want to get back to what I previously felt was normal. ย We overfill our bodies with refined sugar and weird fats derived and synthesisedย from all sorts of insanity, repress emotions, and agree to be a part of a jumble of people exudingย their disdain for life – no more. ย I have no desire to be mindlessly drunk or to suppress any part of me. ย The main thing I miss is sex and chocolate (I’m talking 100% organic, farm assured cacao baby), 13 days and counting until those are back in my life.

Interested?

I’m open for questions if anyone else considers on embarking on this incredible, life changing journey. ย NOTE: Blog update – it’s taken my some time to process and despite the amazing dieta and healing with beautiful fellow journeyers on this retreat; I renounce my recommendation of this particular centre. ย It’s transpired a misplacement of power has occurred, on several occasions. ย Unfortunately, many western women (especially blonde) have been pray to shaman who have more ‘power’ then they can handle – unless male, or going in a couple, please seek yourself a FEMALE shaman. ย I know an amazing couple who work with medicine who have helped manage this situation with love and understanding, there are always people you can trust, but be sure not to put yourself in a vulnerable space..

Much love, thanks for reading

Vitamin D

sunshineD

Vitamin D requirements in the UK is my main focus for this post, as well as any other part of the world where we don’t recieve adequate sunshine during winter and changing months to keep ones body topped up with vitamin D.

Considering our change through the industrial and agricultural revolutions over the past few hundred years (or perhaps longer, don’t quote me and feel free to correct me on that one) we don’t get out so much. ย  Particularly during the summer months when we could probably accrue a nice stock of Vitamin D to see us through the winter. ย Our bodies need vitamin D to:

  • Support a healthy immune system and therefore not be so sick prone
  • Help build/maintain healthy bones (along side calcium)
  • Promote healthy muscle function, including the heart muscle and respiratory/breathing tissues!
  • Work with brain development
  • Manages calcium levels in the blood and all over the body, calcium not only important for bones but for functioning and communication of the bodies vast nervous system.

So all pretty important things. ย If you’re deficient in Vitamin D you can bet you feel

  • Tired and unable to get moving
  • Unexpected weakness
  • Chronic pain
  • Easily broken bones

Generally, unless you eat enough oily fish (with the bones of the small guys like sardines, mackerel or tinned salmon* – be mindful of choking hazards) and/or get enough sun, or live in a country with better sun UV penetration, Vitamin D can be something we’re lacking, especially the bulk of us who usually work indoors.

What to do about Vitamin D if you’re deficient?

Most likely your doctor will tell you to buy some supplements, unless it’s a really severe case of deficiency and they may give you an injection. ย Both are fine. ย Just be mindful you can take too much of this good thing and it is a fat soluble vitamin and therefore will store in the body in an unhealthy manner if you have an excess. ย There are generally 2 different varieties and 2 different strengths you can get, get the lower strength (0.010 micro grams/day) unless advised otherwise. ย The type needs to be D3, not D2, here’s why:

Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) which is derived from plant sources also known as Viosterol and is produced by yeast and fungi. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), ย  which used to only beย derived from animal/fish sources such as cod liver oil, is now alsoย found in vegan form from the microorganism, lichen. ย Vitamin D, (D2 and D3) are also fat soluble vitamins which means they require ย some dietary fat to be present for their absorption (hence another reason oily fish rocks).

Vitaminย D3 is produced in your skin when UVB ย rays in the sunlight interact with 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC) present in the skin. ย D3ย has a much larger efficacy (i.e. is much more effective) that D2, about 4:1 ratio of doses needed to achieve the same results, so don’t waste your time with a D2 supplement.

*Mushrooms are also reported to contain vitamin D – to give yours a boost, sun dry them in direct sunlight (of course if in UK needs to be done in the summer months) and store in an airtight container (if you can wait that long to eat them!) for consumption through later months of the year to ad a natural boost to your levels.

Hope that helps. ย Always remember moderation, and natural balances are always better than supplements, get out in the sun when you can, remembering to take care during 11 – 2pm during summer months when the sun is the most hot, seek shade and plenty of water.

Ayahuasca Adventure

aya3

So finally I’ve booked it. ย My trip to the Amazonian rain forest in Peru for this ayahuasca adventure. ย 4 weeks, just me, myself and I; set with the intention to unwind, deprogram and realign to who I say I choose to be. ย Thanking and leaving the past now not useful parts behind me..

Over the past year I’ve been attending regular Embodied Relation Yoga Therapy with a fantastic therapist teacher, Kate Ellis. ย This therapy of allowing my true threads of self to emerge, combine this with my ever unfolding path of yoga, and being married to a wonderfully different yet similar being to I; has supported my feeling the most comfortable with myself than I can ever remember being. ย  But, living a constant life in London, so much happens so fast, with people struggling to get along with themselves and each other, I’ve foundย can be tiring. ย I keep flitting between feeling OK with where I’m at, trusting and knowing I’m on the right path, to wanting to chuck it all in and live in a tree house somewhere remote and wild.. ย The more I’m working with Kate and unveiling my true self, the more I KNOW that part of my path here on Earth, is to be that innocent playfulย expressionist, encouragingย others to give in to their innocenceย too.. ย Not to be scared of the weird part of ones self, but to embrace it and transmuteย the voices of self-limitation into something more supportive of creative living..

Hence, finding myself embarking on this adventure, now new questions arise about what it is I might find. ย I’ve discussed this path with many and until last week’s session with Kate my questions just seem inhibited some how, but now.. ย I want to be able to decipher those energies which are not mine but yet plague me for energy, I intend to be able to see with more clarity where my true path lies rather than seeking out the safest option. ย This trip isn’t about getting high on this ayahuasca adventure and forgetting all ones problems, quite the opposite. ย It’s about shining a light on those deeply unconscious parts of ones self which feel problematic, the parts which we cannot see with this 3D viewing physical eye. ย Seeing these parts so they may be assimilated and processed with conscious awareness, helping to further ones path into peaceful living. ย I’ve been manic, stressed, hospitalised and nearly killed by the effects of stress on my sensitive system (in the forms of ulcers and Crohn’s disease); I’m now a long way from there but can still feel now is a good time to move beyond that further. ย We’re entering, or we’ve entered already into a new paradigm, times are a changing for the better and therefore we have much strength given to our healing. ย The new moon came into Virgo (sign of healing and getting things right) yesterday and it’s like the planets themselves are saying, “do it! ย Break out from the things which don’t feel healthy!”

The ayahuasca adventure retreat and Shaman I’ve chosen is one which has been recommended to me by someone personally trained by the Shaman and also attending this adventure. ย Always with this nature of work, one MUST know one’s lineage when embarking on such a sensitive and potentially dangerous journey if in the hands of the inexperienced or untrue. ย Check out www.kataricentre.comย if you want more information on a place in Peru which has been verified as authentic.

I’ll write more about this in due course, check back later ๐Ÿ˜‰

Meditation in Daily Life – Calming the mind

mike1

There are many types and styles of meditation all of which are practiced for a variety of reasons.ย  These reasons span from simply finding a calm space in a hectic world to actually changing ones view of how one perceives the world.ย  Whatever your motivation or reason to meditate then hopefully you will find some useful information and guidance within the following series entitled Meditation in Daily Life.

Meditation & Calming the mind

Whether you are a complete beginner to meditation or an experienced Buddhist practitioner the first goal in meditation is to calm the mind.ย  There are several techniques to help with this although by far the most common way is to have something to concentrate the mind on, like a point of reference or a focus point.ย  Whilst this may sound a little contradictory when you say calming the mind by focusing on something, it may help to understand that as well as calming the mind, when meditating we also need to be fully aware and consciously working with our mind otherwise we may as well just be asleep.

Meditating on the breath is one of the most popular methods and especially easy for beginners to practice.ย  This involves focusing on the breath, not forcing the breath but just being aware and conscious of our breath; ideally using the stomach to control your breathing and inhaling and exhaling through the nose.ย  Perhaps just try this for a minute before you move to the next paragraph and see how it feels.

Before talking in more depth about meditation practice, maybe it would be helpful to explain how having this focus helps to calm the mind.ย  We all have distracting thoughts to contend with whilst meditating, no matter how much meditation experience one has.ย  The difference is that the more you meditate the less the thoughts distract you.

To analyse thoughts is sometimes referred to as contemplation and whilst this can be positive in some situations, it is not particularlyย beneficial for calming the mind.ย  Neither, on the other hand, should one try and block these thoughts as this will just dull the mind and in the end make you feel quite tired.ย  What we do when a thought pops into our mind when we are meditating is simply acknowledge the thought but then let it go without judging or focusing on it; give it the least amount of energy possible.ย  Then we return to our focus, in this case our breath.ย  Without something to return our focus to it would be difficult to steady and calm our mind as it would soon start to follow its own picture show and before long we would be off on a daydream.

There are many scientifically proved benefits from meditating and calming the mind that we start to experience as part of our daily lives:ย  It is known to increase our ability to focus and concentrate, increase our self awareness, develops a real sense of well being and calmness and if this is not enough, extensive research claims meditation leads to an increase in happiness!!

The next article in this series talks about practical aspects of meditation such as where and when to meditate along with useful tips to help motivate you to get your bum on the cushion ๐Ÿ™‚

Less Like Hard Work

flowers

I’ve been working with an intention for the last 3 weeks to not work so hard. ย I know I know! ย My work is on a freelance basis, therefore one needs to work really hard to make it happen (it’s ok mum, I’m doing greatย withย work).. ย Getting places on time. ย Being in a committed relationship, this too requires work, and, personal development plays a big part in my life, always working hard to be the best I can be. ย Friendships require effort and attention, and so does physicalย yoga and Pilates practice, Meditation and studying a nutritionist diploma. ย Life can be hard work!

Any of that sound familiar?!

So here’s where things have started to shift for me and how not working so hard has been the ultimate blessing for my productivity and creativity.. ย I regularly go for 1:1 sessions with the wonderful Kate Ellis (look her up for amazingness in and around deep yoga journeying), and one thing she observed, which I now feel I observe in many around me, is the drive to work really hard! ย To be strong and make things happen!

I grew up with the mantra to work hard for what I wanted, be that physical achievements, work, studies or relationships. ย Reflecting, I’ve achieved really well from my degree, several decent jobs and many other qualifications now under my belt; I’ve been married for over 2 years and I feel I have a beautiful set of friends I love and appreciate. ย I worked F-ing hard to get to where I am now, sitting in my yoga dojo in my warm and lovely home; and I’m grateful for all my hard work and that of those around me to help me get to here. ย However, I’m now learning, there is a different way…

Downfalls of working excessively hard: Fatigue, tiredness, stress (leading to development of Crohn’s disease for me), control issues, sore and tight muscles and generally an absence of the lightness in life.

It doesn’t have to be this way..

So, this last 3 weeks experiment of not working so hard have been some of the hardest 3 weeks of my life to date! ย Learning to let go, properly let go of things, express what bothers me (rather than swallow it and tell myself I need to work harder to avoid certain feelings) be open to opportunities but stop trying to make so much work and happen all at once; being able to trust that I do have enough work, more is coming to me and that I teach awesome classes and am a great friend and wife without having to spend so much energy. ย Among the challenge and the bouts of major anxiety I can finally feel not working so hard working for me.. ย Life is unfolding in a much more natural way and my own practice and teaching have just spun off to a whole new level of awareness and spaciousness; holding a space rather than trying to fill it with the best solutions I could find. ย Friends and relationships will stay if they’re meant to be, meeting up with someone doesn’t need to be a chour but an easy meeting when and where paths are crossing and vibrations resonate.

Does any of this echoย for you? ย Are you exhausted with life? ย Try taking a step back and let it come to you. ย Trust me, as a freelancer getting over an unhealthy relationship with money and self worth, it’s hard not chasing every lead; but relaxing, trusting and staying more open and focused to the now, has invited in more work and better clients than I could have found marching the streets of London for 10 years, wearing a body poster. ย Lol, funny but unnecessary image.

Watch, Listen and Learn from yourself. ย Stop forcing that yoga posture, stop forcing yourself to perform like a circus monkey. ย Be full present in Each and Every Moment. ย Honor your softer side in balance and harmony with your harder edge..

With love xxx

P.s. I don’t mean stop getting out of bed, turning up for work or calling your friends! ย Apply effort that feels nourishing. ย Be kind to you.

Best. Deo. Ever.

aromaco2

I used to rely on aerosol deos, I thought it was unnatural how much I sweat.. ย Over recent years or so there has been publicity about the connection between breast cancer and theย lymph nodes (detoxing glands) are under your arm pits; it therefore seems counter intuitive to put something on to such a sensitive place which contains hazardous chemicals (i.e. many mainstream deos). ย I tried crystal deos, natural roll ons, making my own, you name it I tried it, but I still had to wash 3-4 times a day to stop smelling like the pits!.. ย Then, a good friend hadย visited Lush before a dance party, she gave me one of the new samples she had..

Aromaco, by Lush. ย Every time I wear this with no perfume, I get compliments on smelling nice! ย Patchouli soft fragrance, easy on the skin but works all day against smell. ย I have a very active life, this deo has been spot on even since I first tried it.

A Lot easier on the skin than aย previous home made version (bicarb of soda wasn’t the best for my sensitive skin ‘sigh’). ย I’ve been using aromacoย for over a year and it’s great! ย Lush Aromaco

Technicalities

A bit more below about sweating, and why this deo works for me, without feeling compelled to block up my underarm pours with antiperspirants anymore..

How much you sweat depends on a couple of different factors, sweat, or perspiration (as some would rather call it), is the bodies natural way of cooling when one gets hot, heat from exercise, hormone fluctuations (as happens to most women each month), and stress or anxiety levels andย the body being in fight or flight mode (sometimes can be a long term issue). I used to sweat a lot; fortunately these days it has dramatically reduced; I put thisย down toย mediation practices intertwined with yoga, which have helped to lower my stress and anxiety levels dramatically. ย I would be sweating profusely, literally sweat dripping from under my arms (especially if in contact with certain people, even just eye contact) and yet my arms would be ice cold! ย These days, I can actually wear tops with sleeves and not worry about staining the under arms within 2 minutes!

If your body is hot, i.e. if it’s going through a lot of energy andย you’re doing some physical exercise (i.e. running), or fighting off some disease or bacteria, or, if you feel very anxious (then your body is constantly making lots of energy readily available to be able to flight or fight as a response to stresses being felt; imagined stresses through worry, mental stresses trying to meet deadlines or immediate physical threats). ย Your body isย working harder to pump sweat out so that it can cool down as the sweatย evaporates from your skin and take some of your excessย heat with it. ย This is one branch of homeostasis,ย and is regulated by theย hypothalamus in yourย brain.

Your body needs to be able to keep it’s baseline temperature, despite all this energy and heat (usually produced as a byproduct); so that itย can continue to work optimally.ย ย Enzymes which catalyse reactions in our cells all function at preferred temperatures, if this temperature is too high, it can not only inhibit functioning of certain enzymes and reactions but it can destroy (denature) them too. ย You see, anyone with a high enough temperature get’s pretty quick medical assistance, your body has to work even harder to keep doing it’s job in extreme conditions (hot or cold) – hence why we sweat when hot and shiver when cold (among many other homeostatic processes)..

On to smell.. ย How your sweat smells also has different potential causes, of course, the most common reason is due to naturalย bacteria under your arms, feeding on the sweat and giving off odor as their byproduct, thus is the type which is generallyย avoidable (yay) by washing or using certain products which have an antibacterial effect. ย Also, for some of the population it can be affected by what you eat. ย I happen to be in the minorityย of the bodies who metabolise foods in such a way that my sweat can take on smells from foods such as garlic, literally, even straight out of the shower, my armpits will have a certain strong odor! ย Fortunately I’m happy to leave garlic out except for special occasions and the Aromaco deo seems to keep the underarm bacteria in check so this issue doesn’t stand for me. ย However, one must wash ones pits at least once a day – deo cannot be used to simply mask a smell which is already there.

Mother Ayahuasca, round 5

plant medicine b

Coming back to the subject of ceremony with medicine, I’ve heard of a few cases of whimsical usage of the medicine and thus some perspectives to be tainted. ย Of course, it’s not going to be for everyone and it’s important that you must know your Shaman is someone you can trust – word of mouth generally offers a good recommendation..

I wrote in my previous plant medicineย blog about my first retreatย drinking the sacred vine, as known as Ayahuasca (along with it’s counter part the Chacruna leaf), to induce a healing from the inside out. ย This healing is usually accompanied by a felt sense (felt differently for each individual) of el madre, or ‘the mother’ which is one of the effects of the medicine going to work on your physical, emotional, spiritual, and or other bodies of your existence.

This most recent experience again has served me kindly and gently, after 4 cups (usually 1 or 2 is enough..) of the not so pleasant tasting medicine, I found myself once again on a journey, a journey of my body. ย It’s never hit me with explosive vomiting or toileting as means of the releasing; my purging again this time being based on movement and laughter.. ย Having been guided by theย shaman, who was new to me, myย depth of appreciation for this +2000 year old ceremony has once again grown..

I could feel the medicine working in my stomach and intestines; for the whole duration I felt nauseous, perhaps sometimes before one is ready to purge one’s bowels the medicine and moment has to be right.. ย As told by the shaman that it’s probably only a matter time, perhaps more work needs to be undone on my path before the medicine is ready to help me release my gastro associated workings.. The geometric patterns, stars on the ceiling and overwhelming sense that in every moment ANYTHING is possible; the squirming, leg shaking, finger twisting, skull exploring motions that again wouldn’t let my body sit still like most other internally journeying participants.. ย All for my interpretation pointing to the fact I’m in exactly the right field of work, with a need to further explore the physical! ย But there’s something in my guts still not budging..

Makes sense if I’m 100% honest with myself, I am still exploring an interesting relationship around eating (having my Crohn’s mostly under wraps) ย an oral persona to play out.. ย I thought I could get away with once again denying to myself and others that I still have work to do here,ย but the medicine, the mother, knows.. ย I am the kind of person who craves an authentic life and the medicine has helped me to once again, shine a light on the parts of me which were being disingenuous to this treasured trait. ย The joy and sometimes the woe of Ayahuasca, it gives you just what you need, which may be the furthest point away from what you think you need!

May the integration of lessons continue, the real journey starts now ceremony is over!..

The “L” Vitamin

loveee

Researching about depression for my Nutritional diploma and I came across this. ย Wouldn’t you agree? ย If not, I prescribe upping your dose and reassess:

Vitamin L (The Love Vitamin)

“..as coined by humanologist, Bethany ArgIsle. ย One of the most important nutrients for optimum health is a daily dose (or more) of Love. ย This vital human emotion/expression/ experience is necessary for the optimal functioning of people and all of their cells tissues, and organs. ย It is found in most of nature – in foods, domestic animals, friends, and family – and is used to heal a wide variety of diseases. ย There are no toxic effects, but deficiency can cause a wide range of ailments.. .

.. ..This vitamin acts as the ‘Universal’ vitalizing energy.. ..is particularly important to heart function and the circulation of warmth and joy. ย Digestion is very dependent on appropriate doses of vitamin L, as is the function of the nervous system. ย Adrenaline, the brain endorphins (natural tranquilizers and energizers), and other hormones are enhanced by vitamin L as well.”

Brilliant Buckwheat

buckwheat

Why it’sย Brilliant:

  • Gluten free
  • Complete, vegan protein (contains all essential amino acids)
  • Iron, zinc, manganese and magnesium rich (essential minerals)
  • Makes excellent pancakes (taste and consistency)
  • Easy to digest

Buckwheat, NOT a member of the wheat or grasses family but actually related to rhubarb or sorrel, the parts of it generally eaten are it’s triangular fruit seeds (groats),ย it was one of the oldest crops but became less and less grown recently due to it not thriving so well when used alongside lots of nitrogen fertilizers (bit strange to consider if it doesn’t need it then why use it!.?). ย It’s thought to have originatedย in South East Asia and is the primary ingredient to the Japanese Soba noodles. ย Yum.
